Trusting the Becoming Before We See the Wings

Trusting the Becoming Before We See the Wings

What if transformation asks us to surrender before it asks us to fly?

I was going through photographs from this summer when I came across these memories from a visit at a butterfly sanctuary.

I remembered standing in front of the chrysalises with reverence, looking at those small, quiet forms suspended before me.

From the outside, there didn’t seem to be much happening.

No fluttering wings.
No brilliant colors.
No evidence of the beautiful creature that would eventually emerge.

Just stillness.
Waiting.
Becoming.

We often talk about transformation as though it is something we do.

We decide to change.
We make the plan.
We work harder.
We become determined to create a different life.

But looking at these photographs again, I wondered if some of our deepest transformations begin differently.

Perhaps they begin with surrender.

A caterpillar cannot become a butterfly while insisting on remaining a caterpillar.

There comes a point when the familiar form can no longer accompany it where it is going.

And I think there are seasons in our lives like that, too.

Times when an old way of thinking no longer fits.
When something we’ve carried has become too heavy.
When the life we’ve known feels as though it is quietly making room for something we cannot fully see yet.

Those in-between places can be uncomfortable.

We want evidence that we’re moving forward.
We want to know what comes next.
We want to peek inside the chrysalis.

But perhaps becoming asks for something else.

Trust.
Patience.
And the willingness to allow something within us to change before the world around us does.

Later at the sanctuary, I watched butterflies moving freely among the flowers.

One opened its dark, iridescent wings in the sunlight.

And then I witnessed something I had never expected to see—two monarchs joined together in the intimate continuation of their life cycle.

Suddenly the story felt larger than one butterfly emerging.

Transformation wasn’t the ending.

It was the beginning of what became possible afterward.

To fly.
To seek nourishment.
To encounter another.
To participate in something larger than itself.

Maybe our transformations are like that, too.

We often want to change the circumstances around us first.

The relationship.
The job.
The situation.
The world.

But some of the most meaningful change begins somewhere no one else can see.

Within our own heart.
Within the beliefs we’re willing to release.
Within the stories we’re finally ready to stop carrying.
Within the person we are becoming when nobody is watching.

And eventually, what changes inside us changes the way we meet everything outside us.

Perhaps transformation isn’t about becoming someone new. It’s about surrendering what can no longer come with us.

Looking at these photographs now, I don’t think the butterfly’s greatest lesson is simply that we can change.

I think it is that there are moments when we must trust the becoming before we can see the wings.

And when the time is right…

we emerge.

With love and light,
Clarissa
